The Japanese national team wins the 2026 Asian Men's Volleyball Championship and ensures qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The Japanese national team was crowned champion of the 2026 Asian Volleyball Championship for Men, after imposing its superiority over its Iranian counterpart and defeating it three games to no return, on Sunday, in the final match hosted by the Japanese city of Fukuoka, bringing the hosts together between the Continental Cup and a direct qualification ticket to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

The Japanese team settled the confrontation with scores of 25-21, 26-24, and 25-23, in a match during which it confirmed its continental superiority, maintaining the title it entered the tournament defending, and adding a new achievement to its record as the most decorated team in the history of the Asian Championship.

According to Volleyball World, the title granted Japan a direct Asian ticket to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, while the top three teams were guaranteed to participate in the 2027 Volleyball World Cup in Poland.

The two teams entered the final with an unbeaten record since the start of the tournament, which gave the confrontation double importance. Especially since the conflict was not over the Asian Cup alone; Rather, it won the first direct Asian seat in the men's volleyball competitions in the 2028 Olympics.

Since the first half, the Japanese team showed its ability to control the pace of the match, and won it 25-21, before facing greater Iranian resistance in the second half, which extended to decisive points, but the hosts succeeded in ending it 26-24. The competition continued in the third half, before Japan ended the confrontation at 25-23, and decided the final without the need for a fourth half.

The Japanese team reached the final after a strong showing against South Korea in the semi-final, ending it with three clean games, with scores of 25-13, 25-11, and 25-14, while the Iranian team needed 4 games to overcome Australia 3-1, with scores of 25-21, 17-25, 25-17, and 25-22.

Japan's coronation came at the end of a 10-day tournament with the participation of 12 teams, divided into 3 groups. The first included Japan, Australia, Bahrain, and Oman, the second included Iran, China, India, and New Zealand, while the third included South Korea, Qatar, Thailand, and Chinese Taipei. Eight teams qualified for the knockout rounds, before the race for the title was limited to the most prominent traditional powers on the continent.

In the third place match, the South Korean team succeeded in grabbing the bronze medal, completing the contract of the three Asian teams that qualified directly to the 2027 World Cup, along with Japan and Iran.

The new title strengthens Japan's historical position in Asian volleyball. It entered the tournament as the record holder in the number of crowns, noting that it is the only Asian team to have previously won men's volleyball gold at the Olympic Games, when it was crowned champion in Munich in 1972.
