Bayern Munich narrowly wins against newly promoted SV Elversberg thanks to Harry Kane

Harry Kane put his hands on his hips and listened to the chants of the Bayern fans who had traveled with him. Thanks to his goalscorer, the industry leader narrowly avoided embarrassment at the sensationally promoted SV Elversberg. At the end of the third matchday of the Bundesliga, the record champions achieved a difficult 2-1 (1-0) thanks to Kane's winning goal (72nd minute) and avoided another setback after the zero number at Schalke 04.

“He cleans it really well. He likes it, he does it often. He did an outstanding job," said Aleksandar Pavlovic, who prepared the winning goal, on DAZN: "I'm happy that I was able to pass the ball to Harry like that and we can now take home three points." But the national player also emphasized: “Elversberg didn’t do a bad job.”

SVE coach Vincent Wagner didn't want to accept congratulations for the good performance. «For God's sake, we lost, there's nothing to congratulate on. Shit's sister is close, I once heard," he said.

In front of 9,307 spectators, Lennart Karl gave Munich the lead in the 26th minute, and Maurice Krattenmacher (61st) scored after the substitution to equalize. Kane then redeemed Bayern, who moved up to fourth place in the table with seven points. After their first defeat of the season, Elversberg is sixth in the table with six points.

David versus Goliath

Even before kick-off, the duel between the village club and the star ensemble from the Bavarian metropolis had electrified football fans all over Germany. There has probably never been a bigger difference between two teams in the 63-year history of the Bundesliga.

SVE coach Vincent Wagner's ultimately successful fight to have his ban lifted after the yellow-red card in the 4-3 win in Mönchengladbach also caused a lot of discussion and was even supported by those responsible at Bayern, including coach Vincent Kompany and CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen.

And then there were the extraordinary conditions for the Bayern professionals, who traveled to Luxembourg on two private planes and, after a night in a five-star hotel, covered the final leg of the journey by bus. At the stadium construction site in Elversberg, Kane & Co. then had to forego their usual luxury and change clothes in containers. A culture shock that Kompany took in stride: “That’s also something that makes the Bundesliga special.”

Kompany rotates

The stage was set for the duel between David and Goliath. For this, Kompany changed his starting eleven to seven positions compared to the 5-0 win in the Champions League against Bodø/Glimt. Among other things, veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala and Luis Diaz only sat on the bench at the beginning. Wagner, on the other hand, relied on the same starting lineup as in the victory in Mönchengladbach and the tried and tested tactics.

But after just five minutes there was the first moment of shock for the home team. Francis Onyeka was injured due to a foul on Ismael Saibari and was unable to continue playing. Noah Darvich came for him. After a good quarter of an hour, the outsider ventured out of cover for the first time - and had the first chance of the game. A sharp cross from Lukas Petkov was directed by Bayern defender Minjae Kim into the side netting of his own goal.

Sedate record champion

It took until the 20th minute before the Munich team fired their first shot on goal. Karl aimed too centrally from around 18 meters, so SVE goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof had no trouble. Overall, however, the favorite acted very sedately. In addition, Michael Olise hardly came into his own in the position behind center forward Kane.

As is so often the case, one brilliant moment was enough for the Munich team to take the lead. Saibari made his way down the left side and crossed across the penalty area to Karl, who finished from close range. A mood dampener for the newcomer who had just shed his reserve.

Shortly before the break, Cole Campbell caused celebration with the supposed equalizer, but it quickly fell silent. Due to a previous offside position, the goal was disallowed after minutes of review by the VAR.

After the change came Krattenmacher's big appearance. The 21-year-old, who moved from Bayern to Elversberg in the summer, scored the equalizer with a dream shot into the top corner. Kompany reacted immediately by substituting Kimmich, Musiala and Diaz. The SVE had nothing left to counter the concentrated offensive power.
