Iran handed over seven-day ceasefire plan to US, Trump rejected proposal

Iran handed over to the United States a seven-day ceasefire plan to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. A few hours later, The Wall Street Journal reported that US President Donald Trump rejected the proposal and did not rule out resuming the military campaign.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi earlier told reporters at the UN that Tehran had communicated the peace plan through Qatar. According to him, the agreement was supposed to start a seven-day countdown until the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the cessation of hostilities in the region.

“If the American side has a serious intention to conclude an agreement and open the Strait of Hormuz, then everything is now prepared for this,” Araghchi said.

However, as The Wall Street Journal reported, citing unnamed American officials, Trump rejected Iran's proposal and also told his advisers that he expects the bombing to resume after the November congressional elections.

The US President also published a map of the Strait of Hormuz on his social network Truth Social, circling it and captioning the image with the words “Trump Strait.”

Speaking from the UN this week, Trump announced that he had a big decision to make: destroy Iran or enter into an agreement with it.

A US official previously told Reuters that the US and Iran were engaged in "positive and constructive negotiations through mediators."

However, according to The Wall Street Journal, Trump privately expressed doubts that Iran would comply with his demands.

The war with Iran, launched by the United States and Israel on February 28, has killed thousands of people, mostly in Iran and Lebanon. Tehran responded by attacking Israel and US allies in the Persian Gulf.

The conflict provoked a large-scale energy crisis due to Iran's de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

As Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said, the strait will be reopened “subject to the fulfillment of the necessary conditions,” which the parties agreed upon back in June after signing a memorandum of understanding.

That plan, for a period of 60 days, envisaged the cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon, the lifting of sanctions on Tehran, the creation of a fund for the restoration of Iran, including the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran and the United States signed a document on June 18 and hostilities ceased for a time.

The truce lasted less than a month, and mutual attacks resumed on July 8.
