U.S. officials revealed that the Trump administration is planning to sell a batch of ammunition worth US$2.8 billion (approximately NT$89 billion) to Israel, including tens of thousands of highly destructive 2,000-pound bombs.

Reuters reported that a U.S. official familiar with the arms sales, who declined to be named, said that the arms sales include 20,000 MK-84 bombs and 20,000 BLU-117 bombs, and that relevant plans have been notified to relevant congressional committees through informal channels.

The Washington Post was the first to disclose the above-mentioned arms sales plan. Neither the U.S. State Department nor the Israeli Embassy in the United States immediately responded to requests for comment.

Since the outbreak of the Gaza War in 2023, the American public's support for Israel has declined, especially among Democrats. A poll released by Quinnipiac University in June showed that 48% of voters and 66% of Democrats believed that the United States supported Israel excessively, compared with 16% and 20% respectively in 2017.

Israel regularly uses 2,000-pound bombs in Gaza and Lebanon, causing concern among human rights experts. According to Gaza health authorities, Israeli military operations have killed more than 73,000 Palestinians.

A United Nations investigation has concluded that Israel committed genocide in Gaza, a charge that Israel denies.

Israel said its actions were in self-defense and were triggered by an attack by the Palestinian armed group Hamas in October 2023, which killed 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages.

At the same time, the United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran on February 28 this year. In response, Iran subsequently launched attacks on Israel and the Persian Gulf countries with US military bases.

U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, as well as Israeli attacks in Lebanon, have killed thousands and displaced millions.
