The Ministry of Transport’s new license renewal system for senior citizens is on the road. Members call on Bei City to add one-stop service

The Ministry of Transport's "new license renewal system for senior citizens" will be implemented on May 31, and the license renewal age will be lowered from 75 to 70 years old. Taipei City Councilor Lee Ming-hsien said that there are 25,960 senior citizens over 70 years old in the city who hold driver's licenses. Elderly people report that they have to go to several locations to complete physical examinations, cognitive function, and visual field tests before renewing their licenses. He suggested that the Taipei City Government increase one-stop service centers to meet the needs of the elderly. The Transportation Bureau responded that it has coordinated with various district offices to plan one-stop services. For some smaller venues, two-stop services will be adopted, which will be announced on the website of the Supervision Office.

Li Mingxian pointed out that the new license renewal system for the elderly is roughly divided into two parts: those over 70 years old and 75 years old. Those over 70 years old must complete a physical examination and a two-hour senior license renewal training, and can be renewed for a valid driver's license valid until the age of 75; those over 75 years old must pass the cognitive function test, or have proof of not suffering from moderate or above dementia. Documents can be used to renew a valid driver's license with a validity period of three years, and the license will be renewed every three years thereafter. However, most elderly people need to take tests before license renewal, and must travel to different locations to complete relevant pre-license tests. The city government should increase the number of locations for physical examinations and cognitive tests required for elderly drivers to renew their licenses, so as to reduce the burden on the elderly and increase their willingness to renew their licenses.

The Transportation Bureau responded that Mayor Jiang Wanan had previously stated that he hoped that all district offices would cooperate with the Supervision Office to provide venues such as district citizen activity centers or mobile auditoriums to provide one-stop services for physical examinations, lectures, and license renewals, including 12 district offices and the Taipei Municipal United Hospital Outpatient Center, a total of 19 locations. The venue, time, and reservation system were announced on the official website; some venues were small in size, and a two-stop service was adopted as a compromise.
