Democrats plan to use parliamentary investigative powers if they regain the majority

Sources familiar with the discussions said that Democratic leaders in the House and committee assistants, in anticipation of regaining the majority in the midterm elections scheduled for November, considered using hearings, subpoenas, and requests for documents, with the aim of collecting records from entities linked to Trump’s political and business network.

The sources added that Democrats believe that investigating private companies and external financial entities may be more effective than entering into a direct confrontation with the White House, which is expected to reject attempts at parliamentary oversight.

This trend reflects caution within the Democratic Party, in addition to what a number of its members describe as lessons learned from the experience of Trump's first term. Instead of launching an effort to impeach him, Democrats are considering using the investigative powers granted by the Constitution to the House of Representatives, to scrutinize the decision-making mechanisms within the administration, and to verify whether Trump has used his power for his personal benefit or to serve his allies and donors.

A senior Democratic aide said: “We are not going into this with the goal of impeachment. No one wants to have a failed vote on day one. The focus is on building a portfolio of evidence through investigations that will allow Trump to be held accountable.”
