A man from Miaoli City committed a random murder case again after being paroled for seven months, and the Taichung High Branch commuted his sentence to life imprisonment.

Qiu Mingzhi, a 48-year-old man from Miaoli City, served a sentence for attempted murder and was released on parole for only 7 months. After taking drugs last year, he tied a 30cm sharp knife to his left hand and randomly slashed two elementary school girls and a man surnamed Lin who came to save them. The first instance was sentenced to 29 years in prison for three counts of attempted murder. The family members of the victims questioned that the sentence was too light. The Taichung High Court today (29th) revoked the original sentence and changed the sentence to life imprisonment and deprivation of public rights for life.

This horrific case occurred on the afternoon of October 2, 2025. After Qiu Mingzhi took drugs, he tied a 30-centimeter-long sharp knife tightly to his left hand with black tape. He rode his bicycle on the streets of Miaoli City looking for targets. He first attacked an 11-year-old girl named Xu who returned home from school. The girl fled in fear to a nearby supermarket for help. Qiu actually chased him all the way to the door of the supermarket and stabbed another 11-year-old girl named Ding in the chest.

At the critical moment, a 50-year-old man surnamed Lin stepped forward to save others. He was severely injured in the chest and was sent to the intensive care unit for a time. The kindergarten teacher also risked his own life to help the girls escape. Fortunately, after rescue, the two girls and Mr. Lin survived. Mr. Qiu fled back home after committing the crime. He was surrounded by the police, arrested and detained until now. The prosecutor sued and asked for a life sentence.

After investigation, Qiu Nan had a history of attempted murder. In 2015, he broke into the same supermarket while under the influence of drugs and attacked people and people in the store with scissors, causing serious injuries to four people. He served 9 years in prison after being sentenced. He was only released on parole in March 2025. Just 7 months later, he was involved in a random attack, which still frightens local residents.

The first instance of the Miaoli District Court found that Qiu Nan was a repeat offender, and that during the incident, he randomly attacked elementary school girls and innocent passers-by in public places and in broad daylight. The criminal means and the harm caused were serious. He was sentenced to 29 years on three counts of attempted murder. After an extension, the Taichung High Court revoked the first-instance verdict today and changed Qiu's sentence to life imprisonment and deprivation of public rights for life. He can still appeal.
