Venice authorities are considering increasing the tourist tax for entry into the historical center without an overnight stay in local hotels to 30 euros.

The final amount of the tourist tax will have to be established jointly with the government and parliament.

Municipal authorities will also consider increasing the number of days when day-trippers will have to pay entry into the historical center.

Venice authorities are considering increasing the tourist tax for entering the historical center without an overnight stay in local hotels to 30 euros to combat the influx of tourists, said Michele Zuin, a member of the municipal council in charge of budget and tax issues.

“The request to the government to introduce a higher entry fee is not related to the desire to replenish the budget. The question is different: we understand that the current fee of 5-10 euros is already quite affordable for everyone. There is a risk that this amount will not fulfill the deterrent function that this measure should have... There has even been talk of 50 euros, but perhaps we will talk about 30,” he said in an interview with Gazzettino.

Dzuin noted that the final amount will have to be established jointly with the government and parliament.

In addition, he added that the municipal authorities will also consider increasing the number of days when entry into the historical center for day-trippers will be paid.

Earlier, the new mayor of Venice, Simone Venturini, proposed increasing the current entry fee for one-day tourists from the current 5-10 euros to 30-50 euros on certain days when a particularly large tourist flow is expected in the city.
