The Ministry of Education promotes an exchange program for French and German teaching assistants. 30 assistants come to Taiwan to assist in foreign language teaching.

When Chinese students learn French and German, they not only follow textbooks, but also directly interact with teaching assistants from Europe. The Ministry of Education is cooperating with France, Belgium and Germany to promote a foreign language teaching assistant exchange program. This year (2026), 30 French and German teaching assistants will be welcomed to Taiwan. They will enter universities and primary and secondary schools to assist in foreign language teaching, bringing the languages, life and culture of different countries into Taiwanese campuses.

Chen Liying, deputy director of the International Department of the Ministry of Education, said that in order to expand the international horizons of Taiwanese students and increase the diversity of second foreign language learning, the Ministry of Education cooperates with the French Ministry of Education, the International Affairs Office of the French-speaking Government of Belgium, and the Education Exchange Office of the Joint Conference of Ministers of Culture and Education of the German States. French and German teaching assistants are selected by the partner countries to come to Taiwan to assist university and primary and secondary school teachers in foreign language teaching.

The Ministry of Education has commissioned Fu Jen Catholic University to set up an "International Language Teaching Assistant Exchange Program Office" starting in 2024. In September this year, a welcome event for foreign language teaching assistants was held. 30 teaching assistants came from France, Belgium and Germany. In addition to entering the campus to assist in teaching, the Ministry of Education also arranges study tours to learn about Taiwan and local cultural tours, and invites French and German teachers who have taught in Taiwan to share their practical teaching experiences to help new teaching assistants understand the teaching environment in Taiwan.

Chen Liying said that in addition to accumulating teaching experience during their stay in Taiwan, foreign language teaching assistants can also gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan's educational environment and culture through interactions with Taiwanese teachers and students and daily life. They can also bring their own language and cultural experience to campus to share life and perspectives from different countries with Taiwanese students.

Chen Liying said that the introduction of foreign language teaching assistants to campus allows students to not only learn vocabulary and grammar, but also directly interact with native speakers, further contacting the culture and life of different countries through language, connecting second foreign language learning with real life, and allowing students to gain international exchange experience on campus without having to go abroad.

Chen Liying pointed out that the international language teaching assistant exchange program is not only foreign language education, but also a part of international education. Through inter-governmental cooperation, students can expand their international horizons in daily learning; foreign language teaching assistants who come to Taiwan to teach can also learn more about Taiwan through teaching and living in Taiwan, creating more opportunities for educational cooperation between Taiwan and Europe. In the future, we will continue to promote diversified international education exchange programs.
