The Papandayan volcano in Indonesia glowed with a bright blue flame. This is a rare phenomenon, which is accompanied by the release of toxic gases, reports Antara, citing the Indonesian Geological Agency.

Blue flames appeared on the morning of September 24 in Manuk Crater. It arose due to the release of high-temperature sulfur gas, which entered into a chemical reaction with oxygen. Experts recorded the concentration of sulfur dioxide (SO2) at 230 ppm and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) at 120 ppm - these indicators exceed safe standards.

By now, the glow has become less intense, but the danger remains. Manuk Crater is located close to the main hiking trail and campground. Due to the release of gases, tourists and residents were prohibited from staying within a radius of 500 meters from the active craters.
