The Rhine in the Netherlands has become record-shallow

The Rhine River, which is considered one of the most important economic arteries in Europe, has become record-shallow in the Netherlands. The water level has reached its lowest level in the 160-year history of observations, the NRC newspaper reports, citing the kingdom's State Roads and Water Management Authority (RWS).

On the morning of Monday, September 28, the level of the Rhine near the village of Lobit on the border with Germany dropped to 6.09 meters relative to the unified zero height standard used in the country.

The previous minimum was recorded against the backdrop of abnormal heat in August 2026 - it reached 6.12 meters. Then rains in the Netherlands improved the situation a little, but in Switzerland and Germany there was almost no rain for several weeks. However, it is from these countries that the bulk of the water in the Rhine comes.
