Fish and shellfish deaths continue as high temperatures continue on the southern coast of Gyeongnam

Entering September, the water temperature along the southern coast of Gyeongsangnam-do shows a gradual decline, but damage from high temperatures continues.

According to Gyeongnam Province on the 3rd, an additional 150,000 fish, including mullet, rockfish, and flounder, and 169 rows of sea squirts (rows that grow attached to sea squirts below sea level) died the day before.

This summer, which started at the end of July, the cumulative mortality due to high temperatures on the southern coast of Gyeongnam is 5,737,000 fish, 440,000 abalone, and 1,538 sea squirts. Cumulative property damage amounts to 14.335 billion won.

So far, mortality has occurred in 264 marine cages and land-based fish farms in four cities and counties, including Namhae-gun, Hadong-gun, Tongyeong-si, and Geoje-si.

Currently, the entire southern coast of Gyeongnam is a high temperature warning area where the seawater temperature remains above 28 degrees.

Water temperatures are gradually decreasing in September, but the rate of decline is slow, so the high temperature advisory is expected to remain in place for the time being.

Last year, the high temperature warning on the southern coast of Gyeongnam continued for 69 days from early July to the end of September.
