The General Secretary of the Russian Boxing Federation, Alexander Besputin, criticized the refereeing in this fight. The management of the Russian team considers the referees' decision controversial.

Another Russian, Cheerav Ashalaev, defeated Pole Michal Pezhala with a score of 5:0 on the same day and reached the semi-finals in the up to 80 kilogram category.

These boxers met in the final of the last European Championship, then Shumkov was stronger. The Russian is the 2025 world champion, 2024 European champion, and 2023 world bronze medalist.
