Jeju Governor visits flounder farm affected by high temperatures… Review of improvement of salt sewage utilization system

Jeju Island Governor Wi Sang-gon announced on the 1st that he would tour land-based flounder farms that had suffered damage from high temperatures and review the possibility of improving the system for utilizing salted ground sewage.

Governor above visited Noeul English Association's flatfish farm in Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo-si this morning and heard an explanation about the damage caused by high temperatures.

In this farm, about 10,800 flatfish weighing about 770 g recently died due to high temperatures, and deaths of flatfish continue to occur even now.

The above governor then visited the office of the nearby state-of-the-art Clean Halibut Cooperative and talked with fishermen.

At the meeting, aquaculture fishermen requested fundamental measures, such as the development of public tube wells that can provide a limited supply of salt sewage, even for about two months during high temperature periods.

At the same time, prior to the development of public salt sewage wells, the expansion of the water intake pipe extension project to supply seawater at a lower temperature than the current level was proposed, as well as additional support for liquefied oxygen and an increase in the disaster insurance premium support rate for aquaculture products.

Governor Wi responded, "In order to reduce damage from repeated high temperatures in fish farms in the western region, we will review the possibility of improving the relevant departments and systems by considering the issue of salt sewage utilization along with groundwater conservation and the survival of fish farmers."

He emphasized that he will continue to seek ways to strengthen the mid- to long-term competitiveness of the aquaculture industry, including improving processing, distribution, and sales channels, as well as quickly stabilizing the management of aquaculture fishermen.

Jeju Island is strengthening observation of coastal and fish farm water temperatures and continuing on-site response at the 'Severe I' level of high-temperature disaster crisis warning.

As of 11 a.m. on the 30th of last month, the surface water temperature off the coast of Jeju averaged 27.5℃, and Jeju Port recorded 29.3℃, the highest among observation points.

On the same day, it was provisionally calculated that about 33,000 flatfish died in six fish farms in the Daejeong-eup area.
