Trump-Xi meeting held at the White House, no major breakthrough was achieved in extending the trade truce agreement

U.S. President Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House on the 24th Eastern Time. The two sides extended the trade truce agreement and acknowledged the possibility of cooperation between China and the United States, but no major breakthrough was achieved during the talks. In this regard, CNN said that for Xi Jinping now, stabilizing Sino-US relations may be enough.

Analysis pointed out that the atmosphere of the Sichuan-Xi meeting was friendly, but there was still no breakthrough on some issues. Xi Jinping urged the United States to oppose "Taiwan independence." This request is different from the United States' long-term statement of "not supporting Taiwan independence." There is currently no sign that the Trump administration openly accepts China's request. Xi Jinping’s call for the United States and China to jointly manage AI development is also inconsistent with Trump’s position. Trump once said that AI should be called "super intelligence" (SI), and advocated that SI should fully maintain its current development status.

While Xi Jinping has placed special emphasis on the importance of cooperation, describing China's rise as a benefit to the United States rather than a threat, key differences between the United States and China remain unresolved. Analysis pointed out that even if this meeting did not achieve many substantive results, as long as it can maintain the stability of US-China relations and avoid further escalation of conflicts between the two sides, it will already have diplomatic value to Xi Jinping.

Analysts argue that China now has more negotiating leverage than in the past. China still maintains record exports, its AI and robotics industries continue to develop rapidly, and it also controls key raw materials needed by the United States, including rare earths. Therefore, the significance of this Trump-Xi meeting may not lie in whether the two sides resolve the core dispute, but whether the two countries can temporarily maintain stable relations and avoid competition from further escalating into conflict.

For Xi Jinping, when China has more bargaining chips, even if no major substantive breakthrough is achieved, as long as it can keep U.S.-China relations within a controllable range, the summit itself has certain strategic value.
