Changes in the German national team's goalkeeper and Mancini's statements after Italy's loss

Jurgen Klopp, coach of the German national football team, intends to make a goalkeeping change in his first match in charge at home when he faces the Greek national team in the European Nations League, on Sunday.

Alexander Nubel underwent intensive training alone with goalkeeping coach Andreas Kronenberg on Saturday, and appears to be a candidate to replace Marc-Andre ter Stegen in goalkeeping for the German national team.

On the other hand, Ter Stegen and Finn Dahman trained on the other side of the field under the supervision of second goalkeeper coach Stefan Wessels.

If Nubel, who has been playing with Turkish club Besiktas since the summer, participates, it will be his fourth international match. Nobel was part of the German national team's roster at this year's World Cup, where he was the third goalkeeper.

Ter Stegen started in Germany's 1-1 draw with the Netherlands last Thursday, and the goalkeepers followed almost the same training program before that match.

But the media, as usual during the final training session before the matches, were only allowed to follow the first 15 minutes of the training session.

All German national team players participated in training under Klopp's leadership, including strikers Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Burkhardt, who joined the team on Friday to replace the injured Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz.

Klopp had divided the national team roster into two groups, and Wirtz and Burkhardt were initially in the second group, which is scheduled to face Serbia and Greece next week.

Roberto Mancini expressed his acceptance of the jeering of Italian fans following the loss to Belgium 0-2 on Friday, during their match for Group A in the first level of the European Nations League competition, as he insisted that there are positive aspects that can be extracted from the loss.

The winner of the European Championship with his country in the summer of 2021 returned to the leadership of the “Azzurri” for a second era this summer, three years after he left in a controversial manner, to take over the training of the Saudi national team with an attractive salary.

He has the task of reviving the glories of the four-time World Cup winner, after failing for the third time in a row to qualify for the competition.

Mancini started his career with the national team against the “Red Devils” poorly, as he was whistled after the loss, when leaving the Olimpico Stadium in Rome.

When asked after the match whether the task of regaining the fans’ trust was similar to climbing Mount Everest, the former Inter coach admitted, “It is better in the end, when you reach the summit.”

He added: “This is completely normal. You lose and the fans feel frustrated and angry, and this is part of the game.”

But despite the loss, the former English Manchester City coach saw that there were things that could be built on, before the two matches against Türkiye and the French national team away from home.

Mancini said: “We can benefit from the 25 minutes of the second half when we were very aggressive (offensively), and we recovered all the second balls.”

He added: “This was a positive thing for me. We have to try to miss fewer balls, which is what we did in the first half, and have more possession of the ball.”

When asked if the memory of losing in the 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff to Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties in March was still weighing heavily on his players, he said: “Certainly this is something that affects us a little, but we have to get over it.”

He added: “We can definitely improve things, think about positive things, and not always think about what happened before. “We cannot do anything about what happened in the past.”
