New Taipei City motorcycle accidents have dropped, Hou Youyi said that multi-pronged approach has achieved results

The New Taipei City Government held a road traffic safety report today (15th). Mayor Hou Youyi said that the promotion of "Motorcycle Safety Month" from July to August this year has achieved initial results. The number of motorcycle accidents decreased by 1,570, a decrease of 19.1%, compared with the same period last year; the number of fatalities decreased by 6, a decrease of 31.6%; and the number of injuries also decreased by 1,763, a decrease of 18.4%.

Hou Youyi pointed out that it can be seen from the data that the number of motorcycle accidents and the number of deaths and injuries in July and August this year decreased compared with the same period last year, which shows that the multi-pronged approach of engineering, law enforcement and publicity has gradually exerted its effect. Motorcycles are the means of daily commuting and schooling for many citizens. During the Motorcycle Safety Month, the city's road safety teams strengthened publicity for teenagers and the elderly who are at higher risk of accidents, and went deep into markets, communities, farmers' associations and campuses to bring the concept of correct road use into citizens' lives. At the same time, they started to improve the road configuration, roadside facilities and driving environment, and cooperated with law enforcement to reduce high-risk driving behaviors.

Hou Youyi emphasized that traffic safety is not a one- or two-month task. Although Motorcycle Safety Month has come to an end, prevention actions will not stop. Instead, they will continue to be implemented in daily road safety work. The city government will conduct precise publicity based on different age groups and road users, and continuously review accident hot spots and causes, so that safety concepts can be implemented in every ride and at every intersection.

In addition, the Maintenance Engineering Office conducted a project report on "Limited roads, humanistic ∞". Through the "Pedestrian Environment Comprehensive Review Plan", it prioritized a comprehensive inventory of sidewalks on crossing traffic roads, and digitally documented information such as sidewalk length, width, pavement damage, and fixed facilities, as an important basis for subsequent improvements.

The Department of Health and Welfare stated that currently, 660 kilometers of sidewalks on roads with a width of 12 meters or more have been surveyed in the city. It is expected to complete the survey of about 1,448 kilometers of sidewalks in the city in 2017, and to complete the construction of map resources in 2018; the school corridor is closely related to the safety of school children going to and from school every day. Road improvements are expected to be completed at the 100th school by the end of September. The relocation of electrical boxes that affect pedestrian space is also expected to be completed at the 1,000th item at the end of September. From one sidewalk, one school, and one obstacle, the road will be gradually improved, allowing citizens to feel that "the road is better and safer."
