Chancellor Friedrich Merz's job approval rating falls to historic low

BERLIN, September 15 - RIA Novosti. Approval of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has fallen to a record low, according to a survey by the Forsa Institute for RTL and N-TV.

“Only 10% of citizens are satisfied with the work of the head of the German government. Thus, for Merz, this figure has dropped to the lowest level during his entire tenure as chancellor,” N-TV said in a statement.

The survey showed that 88% of Germans evaluate the Chancellor's work negatively. In addition, Merz is rapidly losing the support of the ruling CDU/CSU bloc in Germany, which includes the Christian Democrats led by the Chancellor. According to the survey, 57% of CDU/CSU voters are dissatisfied with the head of the German government. Merz's work is assessed positively by 42% of bloc supporters.

The majority of voters of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), a coalition partner of the CDU/CSU, had a negative view of the chancellor’s work. 87% of surveyed SPD supporters gave a negative assessment. Among supporters of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), Left and Green parties, the share of those dissatisfied with Merz's activities reaches 90-99%.

The survey was conducted from September 8 to 14 among 2,502 people. The statistical error does not exceed 2.5 percentage points.

Earlier, Merz admitted the loss of his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the elections to the parliament of the East German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt. The right-wing opposition party Alternative for Germany won there, receiving about 44% of the vote, while the CDU gained only about 17%. The CDU's result was the party's worst in the state since German reunification.
