President Xi Jinping achieves trade agreement at US-China summit and discusses Taiwan, Iran and AI issues

Chinese President Xi Jinping said at the U.S.-China summit held in Washington, D.C. that the two countries have reached a new trade agreement and that cooperation should be increased.

President Xi urged the United States to handle the 'Taiwan issue', which China considers a core issue, while also discussing the Korean Peninsula issue.

According to China's state-run Xinhua News Agency and China Central Television on the 25th, President Xi said at the summit with U.S. President Donald Trump held at the White House in Washington, D.C. on the 24th (local time), "The economic and trade teams of both sides have reached a new joint agreement. This is good news for the industries and people of both countries, and even the global economy."

At this event, President Xi emphasized that “cooperation is a two-way street,” and that “in order to stabilize economic and trade relations between China and the United States, the list of cooperation must be increased while the list of problems must be reduced.”

He added, "We hope that both sides will make concessions to each other and move forward in the pursuit of mutual benefits to promote the sustainable, stable and positive development of Sino-US economic and trade relations."

China has repeatedly requested that the United States handle the Taiwan issue cautiously, which it has defined as a 'non-infringement' red line.

He emphasized, "I hope that the United States will maintain the correct position against 'Taiwan independence' and handle the Taiwan issue carefully to lay a solid foundation for strategic cooperation between China and the United States and the development of bilateral relations. China's position to protect national unity and territorial integrity is very clear."

China views Taiwan as 'the core of its core interests' and is strongly opposed to US arms sales to Taiwan.

President Xi also urged the United States and Iran to resolve the issue through negotiations regarding the Iran war.

President Xi said, "China has continued to believe that the sovereignty and security of each country must be respected, and has played a constructive role in easing the situation," and said that it supports a return to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the United States and Iran in June, which included a plan to end the war.

He then emphasized, "I hope that both sides will quickly return to the track of resolving the issue through dialogue and negotiations, ultimately reach a comprehensive agreement, including on the nuclear issue, and achieve peace as soon as possible."

He also mentioned the field of artificial intelligence (AI), where the U.S. and China are unable to narrow their differences over regulatory issues, and emphasized, "Both China and the U.S. are AI powerhouses, and although there is competition between the two, cooperation is also possible, and each should play to their strengths rather than being wary and defensive of each other."

President Xi also added, "The two sides should continue AI dialogue, exchange opinions on risks and benefits, and jointly prevent misuse and abuse," adding, "We must maintain human control over AI technology and adhere to a human-centered and benevolent approach to ensure that AI contributes to human development."

Regarding the U.S.-China relationship, President Xi said, "The 'constructive strategic stability' relationship reflects the reality of the U.S.-China relationship and embodies expectations for the future," and added, "It is an important step forward on the path of proper coexistence between the two countries."

He urged, "Both countries must translate this vision into action to open the future of a more stable, healthy, and sustainable U.S.-China relationship."

President Xi said, "The leaders of the two countries achieved mutual visits in less than half a year. This is unprecedented in the history of U.S.-China relations. I want to maintain communication with President Trump in various ways and together steer the course of the great ship of U.S.-China relations."

Xinhua News Agency reported that the two leaders also exchanged opinions on 'important international and regional issues' such as the Korean Peninsula issue, the situation in the Middle East, and the Ukraine crisis, but did not disclose the specifics of the conversation.

Xinhua News Agency also reported that during the meeting, President Trump evaluated President Xi's state visit to the United States as a "great visit" and that he said, "The United States and China are both powerful countries, and President Xi and I are good friends who maintain deep and close communication."

It was also reported that President Trump said, "Under our leadership, the U.S.-China relationship will definitely be able to prosper. The economic and trade teams of the two countries have conducted new discussions and achieved new results, and the two sides must continue dialogue to reach a better agreement."

He then explained, “AI is an issue related to the future of humanity, so the U.S. and China should continue dialogue and strengthen cooperation on this issue.”

Xinhua News Agency also reported that the leaders of the two countries agreed to provide mutual support to successfully host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit and the G20 summit in 2026.
