Civil Protection of the Generalitat has sent an ES-Alert message this Monday night to ask citizens to be cautious due to the heavy rains that are expected this Tuesday morning in the pre-coastal and Catalan coast, from Tarragona to Girona. In addition, the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) has issued a hydrological warning in municipalities of Alt Penedès (Barcelona) due to "sudden" rises in the level of rivers and streams due to the rainy episode.
Precipitation is expected to be especially intense from 08:00 to 14:00 in La Selva, Maresme, Vallès Oriental and Occidental, Barcelonès, Garraf, Alt Penedès, Conca de Barberà, Baix Camp, Alt Camp, Baix Penedès and Tarragonès. The Generalitat has asked citizens to take extreme precautions in mobility and outdoor activities, especially during times of greatest intensity of rain. It also recommends not approaching flood zones and, in case of emergency, calling 112.
Renfe has reported that the suspended medium-distance trains are one that was due to leave at 9:15 a.m. from Barcelona's France Station heading to Valencia and another that initially left at 8:45 a.m. from the same station to Zaragoza.
On the other hand, the high-speed trains that were supposed to start their routes in that time slot will run from 11:00 a.m. as long as weather conditions allow it.
The affected trains are the AVE to Madrid at 06:57 hours; the Alvia leaving Barcelona at 08:50 am; the Avant Figueres-Vilafant-Madrid at 07.53h; the Alvia Barcelona-Vigo-Urzaiz at 09:05 hours and the AVE Madrid-Barcelona at 07:57 hours.
The departure of the Barcelona-Madrid AVE from 09:55 hours has also been delayed; the Madrid-Figueres-Vilafant AVE at 07:27 hours; the Euromed Figueres-Vilafant-Alicante at 09:09 am and the AVE Madrid-Barcelona at 08:27 am.
This Tuesday, Catalonia activated the red warning - extraordinary danger - due to torrential rains that could exceed 180 liters per square meter in just three to six hours, while Galicia and the Valencian Community maintain an orange warning - significant danger - due to intense rainfall and, in the Galician case, also due to maritime storms.
The red alert will remain active between 06:00 and 14:59 on the northern coast and pre-coastal of Tarragona, where up to 180 liters per square meter are expected in twelve hours, an amount that, according to the Meteorological Agency (Aemet), could be exceeded in an interval of between three and six hours and affect the surrounding regions. Given this situation, Aemet has warned of "probable flooding and flooding of riverbeds", which is why it asks to follow the recommendations of Civil Protection.
In the rest of the Catalan provinces - Barcelona, Girona and Lleida - there is an orange level due to rainfall of up to 60 liters per square meter in one hour and accumulations of more than 150 liters in three or six hours; In addition, there are warnings for storms accompanied by hail and wind gusts of between 70 and 90 kilometers per hour, without ruling out sea waves or tornadoes near the coast.
In Galicia, the west and southwest of A Coruña maintain the orange warning from 12:00 p.m. until the end of the day due to accumulations of up to 80 liters per square meter in twelve hours. The Aemet has also activated the orange level due to coastal phenomena in the west of A Coruña, where a southerly wind of between 62 and 74 kilometers per hour, force 8, is expected around Finisterre. In Pontevedra the rains will affect the Rías Baixas, the provincial interior and the Miño, also with 40 liters in twelve hours, while in the Rías Baixas 15 liters may also be recorded in one hour.
Furthermore, in the communities of Asturias and Cantabria the yellow level remains active due to strong gusts of wind that will range between 80-90 kilometers per hour.
Flooded homes in Utiel-Requena
On the other hand, the waterspout that fell this Monday afternoon in the Valencian region of Utiel-Requena has left accumulations of almost 60 liters per square meter in Requena, has complicated circulation on several roads and has caused water to enter homes, for now without serious material damage.
According to the Generalitat Emergencies, the current episode of rain and storms in the province of Valencia has forced 112 to manage, between 5:45 p.m. and 9 p.m., six incidents related to these intense rainfall, all of them in the Plana de Utiel-Requena region.
The most common have been related to the accumulation of water and mud on roads such as the N-322 and N-330, and the entry of water into homes. According to data from the Avamet network, 58.4 liters per square meter have been collected in four hours in Requena, 40.7 in Muro d'Alcoi (Alicante), 26 in Enguea and 22 in Aras de los Olmos.
A flood forces 16 people to evacuate in Corte de Peleas (Badajoz)
A total of 16 residents of the Badajoz town of Corte de Peleas were evacuated from their homes on Monday night due to the flooding of the Garandina stream as a result of the heavy rainfall recorded. The increase in the water level of the stream, which crosses this town from north to south, has affected five nearby homes, four of them inhabited, sources from the 112 Emergency Center of Extremadura have reported.
To avoid risk situations, emergency personnel have chosen to evacuate 16 people, who have gone to the homes of relatives.
The increase in flow and its extension to urban bordering areas has also affected two passenger cars - not occupied - and an electrical tower. The same sources have pointed out that the water level as it passes through the municipality "is already decreasing."
