Germany extended the duty period of the Patriot air defense system in Turkey, which it deployed in Malatya within the scope of NATO, by approximately 7 months.

Germany decided to extend the mission period of the Patriot air defense system, which provides support to Turkey's air and missile defense within the scope of NATO. The German Patriot unit, which started its duty in Malatya in June, will remain in Turkey until April 2027 with the new decision.

In the statement made by Germany's Permanent Representation to NATO, it was stated that the Bundeswehr will continue its contribution to NATO air defense and will continue to support burden sharing in different wings of the Alliance. With the extension of the mission, the activities of approximately 150 German soldiers and a Patriot fire unit will continue in Turkey.

The mission would end in September 2026

Germany announced that the Patriot unit would be sent to Turkey in May 2026. According to the initial planning, the task force was expected to be in Turkey from the end of June until September 2026.

The unit assigned by the Bundeswehr; It consisted of a Patriot fire unit and approximately 150 soldiers. German forces were planned to serve in Turkey within the scope of NATO's Integrated Air and Missile Defense System.

While the unit arrived in the Malatya region in mid-June, the operational readiness of the system was announced by the Bundeswehr in July.

With the new decision, the term of the mission, which was expected to end in September, was extended by approximately 7 months and moved to April 2027.

Takes over from US Patriot unit

The German Patriot system did not come to Turkey as part of a separate deployment created from scratch. Germany replaced the US Patriot unit that previously served in the region.

The Ministry of National Defense announced that the German Patriot system was deployed to Kürecik/Malatya and took over from the US Patriot system in the same region on June 24, 2026. The deployment was carried out to strengthen the Alliance's air defense within the scope of the NATO Permanent Defense Plan.

Germany's decision to send Patriots to Turkey was taken during the period when NATO increased its air and missile defense measures following the Iran-related conflicts in the region.

The Ministry of National Defense announced in March that due to regional developments, measures for the security of Turkey's border and airspace had been increased, and in this context, a Patriot system assigned by NATO was deployed in Malatya.

In its statement in May, the Bundeswehr stated that the integrated air defense on NATO's southeastern flank was strengthened due to missiles launched from Iran and regional conflicts.

Serves as part of NATO air defense

The German Patriot system in Malatya operates within the scope of NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defense rather than an independent German air defense mission.

Patriot; With its structure consisting of radar, command-control and missile launchers, it serves as an air and missile defense system that can be used against cruise missiles and certain classes of ballistic missiles, as well as aircraft.

It is not the first time that Germany has assumed Patriot duty in Turkey. The Bundeswehr deployed Patriot systems in Kahramanmaraş between 2013 and 2015 as part of NATO's Active Fence mission.
