Alonso and Sainz collide at the start of the Madring Grand Prix and both finish outside the points

There was so much excitement to see Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz Jr. fighting for a point in the first race in the history of Madring that the disappointment was even greater when both of them collided at the start of the race, ruining the very few options they seemed to have to advance positions. The Madrid native ended up abandoning and the Asturian finished 17th, far from any attempt. There was a small war on the track, another on the radio and a fairly intense one before the microphones of the media.

On lap 12, Alonso had tried to overtake Sainz on the outside on the way to turn 5, but the Spaniard closed the door on him, too much according to the Asturian, who ended up hitting his wing against the Williams.

When the traffic lights went out, the man from Madrid went wide during the first stop and collided a little with Tsunoda, although he avoided any penalty there. However, in the touch with Alonso he was punished with five extra seconds. "Karma!" Alonso said on the radio when he found out about the sanction. "The truth is that there is not much to say... I think he complained on the radio, so he got a sanction imposed on me," Sainz later responded, already standing in the area reserved for questions from the media.

«I think that the nature of that corner will always give rise to these types of crashes because there is only space for one car. And you can't be looking in the rearview mirror while turning, you have to look ahead and focus on your own line. I don't think Fernando was at my level or anything like that," Sainz insisted.

A few meters away, Alonso criticized Sainz's action again: "I think he received a sanction. If they think it deserves it, it's fine for me. Neither of them finished in the points, but I think what they did was unnecessary. There was a lot of space on the left and I was hugging the wall on the right at 340 kilometers per hour. At that speed I prefer that no one locks me against the wall and that I be alive at the end of the race. "There was no need to do that," explained the Asturian, disappointed with the level of his Aston Martin during the weekend: "We didn't have any rhythm."

Sainz retired on lap 43 when he was last, with no options left, and acknowledged that the contact with Tsunoda at the start of the race "damaged the floor of the car." “Unfortunately, from there the car was damaged and it was a race of survival, because I was left without rear downforce for the rest of the race. I wanted to have a good start to see if we could get something out of this Grand Prix, but I think that even with a perfect race we wouldn't have finished higher than 16th place. There wasn't much to fight for," he settled.
