Asaps: ten cyclists killed in one week, unacceptable toll

"Ten cyclists killed on Italian roads in just a week represents an unacceptable toll": says Giordano Biserni, president of Asaps, the Association of supporters and friends of the Traffic Police, who is launching an appeal to motorists.

"We consider every cyclist as a person to be respected, to be protected, not as an obstacle to be overcome quickly - he states - We reduce speed, maintain adequate safety distances and give up any distraction. A risky overtaking, a glance at the phone or a few kilometers per hour more can turn into a death sentence. The safety of the weakest is the measure of the civility of those who drive and of the entire country".

In fact, September is already today - according to Asaps calculations - the most tragic month of 2026, with a provisional figure of 33 victims. Since January 1, 179 cyclists have died, 149 men and 30 women, with 82 users over 65 years of age. In the last week, in particular, there have been ten victims. January ended with 11 deaths, 18 in February, 10 in March, 21 in April, 24 in May, 18 in June, 25 in July, 19 in August, 33 so far in September. In the first eight months of 2026, 146 cyclists died, nine fewer than the 155 in 2025, but the complete figure for September - underlines Asaps - "unfortunately will cancel out this positive indication". As regards the regions, Lombardy is in the lead with 36 deaths, then Emilia-Romagna 25, Veneto 24, Piedmont 19, Campania 12.
