New regulation draft on social media law from Australia

According to the statement, the bill also envisages protecting digital services from design features that may negatively affect young people under the age of 18.

Accordingly, digital services will be obliged to protect young people from content that encourages eating disorders and crime, as well as from posts that encourage hostile ideas about women and gender equality.

Age regulation for social media use in Australia

The legal regulation regarding access to social media platforms by those under the age of 16 in Australia came into force on December 10, 2025.

Within the scope of the regulation, 10 channels, including Reddit, Twitch, Threads and Kick, as well as networks such as X, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat, are subject to age restrictions.

The Australian government aims to reduce the negative impact of algorithms and harmful content on children and young people with the law.

Companies are expected to be fined 49.5 million Australian dollars if they fail to take reasonable steps to remove accounts belonging to children under 16.
