Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan and TRNC Met in Baku

According to the statement made by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, bilateral contacts as well as dialogue on multilateral platforms were discussed at the meeting.

TRNC'S STATUS IS ON THE AGENDA

During the meeting, attention was drawn to the importance of TRNC's observer status in the Organization of Turkish States (TDT).

Ministers emphasized the importance of expanding multilateral coordination and joint initiatives within the Turkic world. Preparatory work for the upcoming TDT Summit was also among the topics discussed at the meeting.

Bayramov and Ertuğruloğlu also exchanged views on regional issues that concern both sides.

HIGH TRAFFIC ON THE BAKU-NICOSIA LINE

Political contacts between Azerbaijan and TRNC have moved to a significantly higher level in recent years.

The Baku administration, which supports the inclusion of TRNC in the Organization of Turkic States, has increased the contacts between parliaments and governments, as well as meetings at the Presidential level.

While the friendship groups of the parliaments of Azerbaijan, Türkiye and TRNC came together for the third time in Baku in April 2026, President İlham Aliyev met with TRNC President Tufan Erhürman in Antalya in the same month.

During the meeting, Aliyev emphasized that Azerbaijan stands by the TRNC and that this support will continue in the future. In June, TRNC Culture Day was held in Baku.

BECAME AN OBSERVER MEMBER IN 2022

One of the important turning points in terms of relations was the granting of observer status to the TRNC at the 9th Organization of Turkic States Summit held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan on November 11, 2022. According to the official records of TDT, TRNC joined the observers of the organization with this decision.

TDT later stated that this step not only showed the solidarity of the Turkish world to the Turkish Cypriots, but also allowed the TRNC to increase its visibility and contacts in the international arena. TRNC also started to take part in various meetings and contacts held under the umbrella of TDT with observer status.

“TRNC IS A PART OF THE TURKISH WORLD”

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev clearly expressed Baku's support for the TRNC in his statements in recent years. Aliyev stated that Azerbaijan was carrying out "active diplomatic efforts" for the TRNC to become an observer in the TDT in June 2024, and that they also support the TRNC becoming a full member of the organization in the future.

Aliyev said, "TRNC is a part of the Turkish world in terms of history. The Turks living there are our brothers." Aliyev's messages of support to the TRNC continued in subsequent contacts; In October 2025, he informed the then TRNC President Ersin Tatar, and in April 2026, he informed the President Tufan Erhürman that Azerbaijan's support would continue.
