The leader of Sweden's opposition left bloc called on the EU to confiscate Russian assets

The leader of the opposition left bloc that won the elections and the future Prime Minister of Sweden, Magdalena Andersson, called on the European Union (EU) to confiscate Russian frozen assets. Politico reports this.

The authors of the material noted that in recent weeks, a group of EU countries led by Germany has resumed discussions on this issue after failing to reach an agreement in December last year.

“Take them, use them,” Andersson said.

She also commented on Belgium's concerns about the seizure of assets from a depository under its jurisdiction, calling on the country to “resolve legal issues.”

On August 28, Swedish Foreign Minister Maxime Prevost said that the kingdom’s position against the use of frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine has not changed, since the risk of their possible seizure remains.

In December 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a direct line, called the EU authorities’ attempts to seize frozen Russian assets robbery.

Putin emphasized that the association would not be able to do this because of the dire consequences “for the robbers themselves.”
