The U.S. Army Reserve is considering deploying units to Southern Command.

The U.S. Army Reserve is evaluating the possibility of making a number of support units available to Southern Command in a few months, which could be related to planning a military operation against Cuba, CBS reported Friday, citing an internal military document and sources.

"The document... states that the Army Reserve headquarters is requesting information from subordinate commands about the availability of six types of units that will be assigned to US Southern Command. The units "will likely be needed in 90-120 days," the material says.

In particular, we are talking about a combat support battalion, an engineering battalion, a medical brigade, an advanced intensive care unit and surgery, a military police brigade, and a logistics command unit, the TV channel reports.

"Although the message (letter - ed.) makes no reference to Cuba, the request for long-term military planning is directed against Cuba," several sources told CBS.

The US military conducted reconnaissance operations this year, clarifying underwater and sea routes of approach around the island nation, several servicemen who wished to remain anonymous told the TV channel.

“Separately, components of the US Air Force were put on high alert and were instructed to prepare personnel for possible actions. However, these plans came to nothing," the statement said.

The channel notes that it refrained from publishing some information out of fear that it could endanger the American military.

The United States has increased political and economic pressure on Cuba in recent months. In particular, in January, American President Donald Trump signed a decree allowing the introduction of duties on imports from countries supplying oil to Cuba, and also declared a state of emergency in connection with the alleged Cuban threat to US national security. The measure worsened the island's fuel shortages, affecting power generation, transportation, food production, health care and education.

The USA Today newspaper in April, citing informed sources, wrote that the Pentagon had begun secret preparations for a possible military operation in Cuba in case a corresponding order was received from the American leadership.
