Belit Onay Won the Second Round of Hannover Metropolitan Municipality Mayoralty

Mayor Belit Onay, a candidate from the Green Party, won by a wide margin against Axel von der Ohe, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), by receiving 61.5 percent of the votes in the second round of the Hannover Metropolitan Municipality Mayoral elections. SPD candidate von der Ohe received 38.5 percent of the votes.

Making a statement after the election victory, Onay expressed her satisfaction with the high support she received and said, "I am very happy to receive great support." he said.

He came first in the first round

Nine candidates competed in the first round for the Mayor of Hannover Metropolitan Municipality.

In the first round held on September 13, Onay came first with 45.6 percent of the votes, while von der Ohe received 21.5 percent of the votes.

Since no candidate could exceed 50 percent in the first round, the two candidates with the most votes competed in the second round.

While participation in the first round of elections was 63.3 percent, the participation rate in the second round dropped to 45 percent.

Belit Onay, the first politician of Turkish origin to be elected as a metropolitan mayor in Germany in 2019, will serve for eight years in the second term.

With the legal regulation made in the state of Lower Saxony, the term of office of metropolitan mayors was increased to 8 years in 2026.
