Busan's May employment rate drops 0.4% year-on-year

Busan's employment rate in May was 58.6%, down 0.4 percentage points (p) compared to the employment rate in the same month last year.

According to the Southeast Regional Data Office's 'Busan City Employment Trends in May 2026' on the 11th, the number of employed people in Busan was 1.699 million, a decrease of 17,000 (-1.0%) compared to the number of employed in May last year.

By gender, men accounted for 65.6%, down 1.1 percentage points compared to May last year, but women rose 0.2 percentage points to 52.1%.

Looking at the number of employed by industry, the mining industry had 243,000 people, a decrease of 11,000 (-4.3%) compared to May last year.

By occupation, the number of managers and experts increased by 16,000 (4.4%) and the number of office workers increased by 11,000 (3.3%), but the number of technicians, machine operators, assemblers, and simple workers decreased by 36,000 (-5.9%), and the number of service and sales workers decreased by 12,000 (-2.7%).

The number of unemployed people decreased by 5,000 (-9.7%) to 45,000.

The unemployment rate was 2.6%, down 0.2 percentage points compared to May last year.

The population aged 15 and older decreased by 9,000 people (-0.3%) to 2,901,000 people.

The economically active population decreased by 22,000 (-1.2%) to 1.744 million, and the economic activity participation rate was 60.1%, down 0.6 percentage points compared to May of last year.
