Kaohsiung City’s first inpatient medical care quality competition for long-term care patients, Fengshan Hospital wins

Fengshan Hospital won the Kaohsiung City Medical Center Quality Award Competition for long-term care patients.

In order to strengthen the quality of long-term care in hospitals, the Kaohsiung Municipal Health Bureau held for the first time the quality monitoring and award competition for inpatient medical care for long-term care patients in medical institutions. A total of 8 hospitals participated. After half a year of two-stage selection, the results were announced today (30th). Kaohsiung Municipal Fengshan Hospital won the championship with zero occurrence of 7 core indicators. The second and third places were United Hospital and Cijin Hospital respectively.

Health Director Huang Zhizhong said that the transfer of long-term care residents from residential institutions to inpatient treatment is an important link in the connection between medical care and long-term care. Most of the long-term care residents are elderly, disabled, have multiple chronic diseases and require tube care. During hospitalization, they face care risks such as falls, pressure injuries, infections, and tube slippage. We hold a long-term care patient hospitalization quality monitoring competition in the hope of identifying risks through actual data, proposing improvement strategies, and continuously tracking results, so as to establish a patient-centered safety care culture.

Eight hospitals, including Fengshan Hospital, United Hospital, Cijin Hospital, Xiaogang Hospital, Gangshan Hospital, Minsheng Hospital, Catholic Shengong Hospital and Jianren Hospital, are participating in this competition. The hospitals will target residents who were admitted to residential long-term care institutions and transferred to inpatient treatment from January to June this year. Ten core quality indicators including unplanned readmissions, pressure injuries, falls, tube slippage, nosocomial infections and abnormal events will be continuously monitored 14 days after discharge.

After two stages of selection including written review and final selection briefing, Fengshan Hospital won the first place by maintaining zero occurrence of seven core indicators including unplanned readmissions, pressure injuries, falls, tube slippage, nosocomial infections, long hospitalizations and abnormal events within 14 days during the competition period.

During the competition, the second-place United Hospital had zero falls and nosocomial infections, and the implementation rate of turning over and positioning was 100%, demonstrating continuous care from hospitalization to return home. The third-place Cijin Hospital had zero unplanned readmissions, pressure injuries, falls and nosocomial infections during the competition. Gangshan Hospital, Xiaogang Hospital, Minsheng Hospital, Catholic Shengong Hospital and Jianren Hospital received outstanding awards.
