Central Government Offices in Delhi to Close on September 11 for BRICS Summit

Central government offices in Delhi and New Delhi will remain closed on September 11 as India hosts the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in the national capital, an ANI report stated. The decision has been taken to support the extensive security, traffic and logistical arrangements planned for the high-level event. The closure will apply only on Friday, September 11. September 12 and 13 fall on Saturday and Sunday and are already holidays.

The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions issued an official memorandum on Thursday announcing the closure. The ministry said the decision was taken considering the scale of the summit and the arrangements required to host leaders and other delegates in Delhi. It also aims to reduce inconvenience to the public during the event.

The BRICS Business Forum and the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit will take place from September 11 to 13 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

"The undersigned is directed to say that the BRICS Business Forum and 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit are scheduled to be held from 11-13 September, 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The Summit will be attended by leaders from about thirty BRICS members and partner countries, Heads of International Organizations and business representatives from BRICS nations including India. Recognising the magnitude of this event, the substantial logistical arrangements involved, and to minimise inconvenience to the general public, it has been decided to keep the Central Government offices located in Delhi/New Delhi closed on Friday, the 11th of September 2026 (12th and 13th of September 2026 being Saturday and Sunday respectively)," reads the order.

The ministry has instructed all concerned authorities to communicate the decision.

The summit is expected to bring together leaders from around 30 BRICS member and partner countries. Heads of international organisations and business representatives from BRICS countries, including India, are also expected to attend.

The event will require security and traffic arrangements across several parts of the national capital. India's BRICS Chairship this year is guided by the theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”.

The theme reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a people-centric approach based on the principle of "Humanity First."

During the summit, leaders are expected to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation among BRICS countries on shared priorities. They will also exchange views on global and regional issues of common interest.

India has held more than 350 meetings and high-level engagements in over 25 cities during its BRICS Chairship this year. These engagements have focused on strengthening cooperation across three key areas: political and security matters, economic and financial cooperation, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges. Business-to-business and people-to-people initiatives have also been part of India's BRICS Chairship programme.

India is a founding member of BRICS and has previously held the group's Chairship in 2012, 2016 and 2021. India assumed its fourth BRICS Chairship on January 1, 2026. The year also marks 20 years since the establishment of BRICS.
