MPF Superior Council opens procedure to investigate mentions of PGR Paulo Gonet in messages from Daniel Vorcaro

The Superior Council of the Federal Public Ministry opened, this Thursday (3), a procedure to investigate the mentions of the Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, in messages from former banker Daniel Vorcaro.

The request was made by the Novo party and will have deputy attorney Francisco de Assis Sanseverino as rapporteur.

The PGR wants to use the case to refute allegations of suspicion.

Behind the scenes, members close to Gonet believe that the measure is opportune so that the Council can schedule a session and the head of the Prosecutor's Office can speak out. Gonet must deny interference in the investigation and close relationship with the former owner of Banco Master.

Allies understand that it is better for him to come forward to respond and prove the absence of interference, in order to avoid the opening of a formal investigation. Through strategy, he prevents "bleeding" and preserves the case.

The PGR will seek to demonstrate that it did not interfere in the investigations. One way to do this will be to say that until October, the date of the messages, the case was with the Federal District Attorney's Office.

Vorcaro's first arrest was the result of work carried out by the first instance since the beginning of 2025. The case was taken to the STF (Supreme Federal Court) by minister Dias Toffoli in December.

The idea is, according to these interlocutors, to respond to the category, and therefore opt for a session of the Superior Council and not a press release, for example.

As Folha showed, there is widespread discomfort in the class with the episode, both among those who preferred to see him removed from command of the case and among prosecutors who support him and see no problem with what has been disclosed so far. Both groups understand that, in any scenario, there could be collective damage to the category's reputation.

During the investigation, there are conversations in which lawyer Ciro Soares forwards messages attributed to Gonet to the former owner of Banco Master. In other excerpts, Vorcaro asks Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF, to call the attorney general and the head of the Federal Police to stop an operation against the financial institution.

Furthermore, the attorney general's son reportedly asked the banker to go to an event he paid for in London, with expenses paid.

Contacted by Folha on Wednesday (2) and Thursday (3), the PGR did not comment.

Gonet asked on Tuesday (1st) for the annulment of the Federal Police report that contains conversations between Vorcaro and an interlocutor identified as Moraes.

The case's rapporteur, André Mendonça, wants the request to be debated by the court's plenary. He should release the process for discussion starting next week. Defining a date will be up to the President of the Supreme Court, Minister Edson Fachin.

On Thursday, the institutional crisis escalated even further: Moraes called for the opening of an investigation against Mendonça as part of the fake news investigation.
