Short film “Mariposa” wins Zózimo Bulbul Award at Brasília Festival

The winners were announced this Saturday (19), at Cine Brasília. “Mariposa” was one of the 12 films selected for the National Competitive Exhibition, among almost 2 thousand works registered. The short film made its debut during the festival.

The Zózimo Bulbul Award is awarded by a jury appointed by the Afrocarioca Cinema Center and the Association of Black Audiovisual Professionals (APAN). The award recognizes productions that contribute to the presence and appreciation of black narratives and perspectives in Brazilian cinema.

In the jury's assessment, “Mariposa” presents “inventiveness within the ancestral territory”, with the creation of its own signs and meanings and the removal of stereotypes related to representations of the black population.

Upon receiving the award, Alexandre Américo highlighted the work's relationship with the creation of new narratives and images about the black population.

"This award especially reflects how committed we are to creating stories and inventing other narratives and other images, detached from these fixed images of what a black person can produce, what a black community can produce, what blackness can produce. So I think this award recognizes us and shows us that we are on a necessary path", he stated.

In addition to the Zózimo Bulbul Award, “Mariposa” received an honorable mention from the official jury of the National Competitive Exhibition. The recognition considered the articulation between photography, editing and sound in approaching the experience and resistance of a territory.

For director Pedro Vitor, the award also recognizes the research and artistic production process developed by black people and people with disabilities, in addition to the political commitment of the work produced by Torta Plataforma.

"This Honorable Mention also says a lot, for us, about this sense of duty to invent a world where capitalism has already destroyed. So it is a commitment, above all political, that this award gives back to us, recognizes us", he pointed out.

The film arose from the meeting between Alexandre Américo and Pedro Vitor and Pedro's approach to the universe of enchantments, Jurema Sagrada and the terreiro religions of Candomblé.

The production was carried out with resources from the Paulo Gustavo Law and is distributed by Ebó Filmes, by Rosy Nascimento. Among the references used in the work are itãs, tales and narratives transmitted in circles, xirês and Candomblé rituals.
