Singer Rick, from the duo Rick & Renner, dies at age 59 in a helicopter accident in Santa Catarina

♬ Occurring yesterday afternoon, Monday, in a helicopter accident in the airspace of the state of Santa Catarina, the death of Geraldo Antônio de Carvalho (December 5, 1966 – September 21, 2026), singer and composer Rick from the duo formed with Renner in 1986, silences one of the most popular voices in country music. Rick leaves the scene at the age of 59, fully active with the duo, celebrating 40 years of existence.

Formed in Brasília (DF) in 1986, the duo Rick & Renner achieved national success in a career that reached its commercial peak throughout the 1990s. In the 1980s, the duo Chitãozinho & Xororó opened doors for country music in large urban centers. It was when country music distanced itself from its country origins and began to become romantic music, albeit with a country style.

It was during this market opening that the duo Rick & Renner – sponsored by Zezé Di Camargo & Luciano, another duo that emerged in the 1990s in the same romantic wave – rose on a national scale from 1992 onwards.

Rick & Renner never had the reach of other country duos of the generation – such as Chitãozinho & Xororó, João Paulo & Daniel, Leandro & Leonardo and Zezé Di Camargo & Luciano – but they made a name for themselves over the 40 years of the duo's existence, which was separated between 2011 and 2012 and also between 2015 and 2018 due to Rick's dissonance with Renner.

The peak of Rick & Renner's career took place in 1998, the year in which the song “Ela é Além” (Elias Muniz) became a viral hit. A year earlier, in 1997, the duo had already scored another hit, “Baby”, a partnership between Rick and Elias Muniz and Alexandre.

Rick & Renner surfed the romantic wave of country music, but with a touch of lightness and eventually even humor, without carrying the melodramatic sentimentality of the repertoire of other duos of the same generation.

A rare black voice to be heard in the country music universe, Rick became the first voice of the duo with Renner from the duo's second album, released in 1992 (on the first album, “Atitude”, released in 1989 independently, Renner provided the duo's first voice).

Born in the city of Monte do Carmo (TO), in the interior of the state of Tocantins, but raised in Brasília (DF) since he was six years old, Rick was recognized as a good singer in the country music universe due to his powerful tenor voice.

In addition to being a singer, Rick was also a composer, with 661 original songs registered at the Central Collection and Distribution Office (Ecad). Through this authorial work, Rick's legacy expanded in the voices of singers like Gusttavo Lima.
