Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar does not object to the deprivation of parliamentary immunity in the phone theft case

The Hungarian Prosecutor General's Office filed a petition to suspend Magyar's parliamentary immunity due to suspicion of committing theft.

Magyar does not object to the deprivation of his parliamentary immunity and is ready to appear before the authorities, as he considers his conscience clear.

Magyar also proposed to consider at an extraordinary meeting of parliament the issue of stripping the immunity of two ministers of the previous government accused of corruption.

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar said that he would not object if the country’s parliament deprived him of parliamentary immunity at the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office to investigate a two-year-old case of the theft of a mobile phone, since he does not consider himself guilty.

The Hungarian Prosecutor General's Office on Tuesday filed a motion to suspend the immunity of Magyar, who is also a member of parliament, due to suspicion of committing theft. In June 2024, in a club in Budapest, Magyar got into a verbal altercation with another visitor because he had filmed him with a gadget. The future prime minister took his phone, put it in his pocket, and then threw it into the Danube.

“My conscience is clear, I ask parliament to immediately deprive me of parliamentary immunity, I will appear before the authorities with joy and pride,” Magyar said in a video message published on the social network Facebook*.

The Hungarian Prime Minister said he considers the case against him fabricated and promised to file a complaint against the police for sending a team of divers to look for a drowned mobile phone in the Danube, “risking their lives.”

Magyar also emphasized that he would be ready to renounce immunity himself, but does not have the opportunity, so he asks parliament to convene an extraordinary meeting in order to simultaneously consider the issue of revoking the immunity of two ministers of the previous government accused of corruption.
