American women's movement icon Gloria Steinem dies

Gloria Steinem, an icon of the American women's movement, passed away on the 2nd (local time). Age 92.

According to Reuters, the Steinem Foundation announced on Instagram that he passed away at his home in New York City.

Steinem is an icon and journalist who led the feminist movement not only in the United States but around the world.

He was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1934, and graduated from Smith College, a prestigious eastern university, with a degree in political science.

Later, while working as a magazine reporter, he infiltrated the Playboy Club as a 'bunny girl' in 1963 and gained fame through articles that exposed the reality of internal labor exploitation.

However, Steinem later said that he regretted writing this article. At the time, American society only paid attention to the fact that a young white female reporter had covered undercover at an adult club, and she suffered from ridicule and sexual objectification for a while.

Furthermore, Steinem is said to have realized that he, too, was very ignorant of women's issues while listening to the testimony of women suffering from the illegalization of abortion.

Six years later, in 1969. Steinem entered the women's movement in earnest through an article titled 'Women's Liberation after the Black Civil Rights Movement'.

Three years later, she co-founded the progressive feminist magazine ‘MS’.

This magazine received a great response by publicizing the existing argument that women should not be called 'Mrs' or 'Miss' depending on their marital status, but should instead use the title 'Ms.'

Steinem is also called a representative of the second generation feminists who were broadly interested in social structural issues, following the first generation feminists who focused on winning the right to vote.

He led the social movement in the 1960s and 1970s by voicing his voice on various issues, including the enactment of the Constitutional Amendment (ERA) to allow women to enter Congress and prohibit gender discrimination in the Constitution, as well as guaranteeing civil rights for blacks and ending the Vietnam War.

She visited Korea for the first time in 2002, and in 2015, she served as honorary chairperson of the 'Women's Cross DMZ' event, where women walked across the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a symbol of the division of the Korean Peninsula, and walked across the military demarcation line between North and South Korea.

The Associated Press reported that Steinem spent most of his life on the road and was at the forefront of rallies and marches throughout his life.

“We can’t achieve true empathy if we’re not in the same room,” he said in an interview with the Associated Press in 2015. “We have to be there with our five senses.”
