Dilapidated Rajasthan School Demolished After Operating in Buffalo Shed

School staff said Rs 12 lakh was sanctioned on Aug 15 and another Rs 6 lakh was later approved for the project.

JAIPUR: A dilapidated govt primary school in Rampura Kanwarpura village near Jaipur, where a Cockroach Janta Party team was attacked on Aug 21 during an inspection under its nationwide ‘School Thik Karo’ campaign, was demolished Wednesday to make way for a new building.

The school, which has 26 students enrolled up to class 5, had been running from a buffalo shed after its old building was declared unsafe and shut about a year ago. Classes have now been shifted to a local resident’s house until the new structure is built.

The replacement building will be funded through Rs 18 lakh from the MLA Local Area Development Fund and is proposed to have two rooms and a washroom. School staff said Rs 12 lakh was sanctioned on Aug 15 and another Rs 6 lakh was later approved for the project. Staff said villagers had assured the school administration that additional funds would be raised locally, if required. No official deadline for completion of construction work has been announced yet.

“This school was originally built in 1985 and over the years, the building became dilapidated. Now, the education dept also has land rights for the area and with a new building, we are hopeful that enrolment of students will increase,” the teacher said.

The development comes less than two weeks after a CJP team led by co-convener Ashutosh Ranka was assaulted and chased away by a group of villagers when it reached Rampura Kanwarpura to “inspect” the condition of the school.

On Wednesday, Ranka said in a post on X, “This is the same school in Rampura that used to operate out of a buffalo shed. Work has now begun there. During the inspection, stones were thrown at us, women were assaulted. But once a good school is built for our children, it will all be worth it!”
