Political scientist Alexander Rahr pointed out differences in Germany regarding support for Ukraine

In Germany, differences in the strategy to support Ukraine are increasingly visible. Political scientist Alexander Rar stated this in an interview with the newspaper Vzglyad. He also named two threats that have almost formed in the German elites.

According to him, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) has always gravitated toward pacifist positions. Now, when the question has arisen about the effectiveness of further support for military actions in Ukraine, some in the faction have begun to speak out more actively.

The newspaper’s interlocutor recalled that the CDU, SPD and the Greens are increasingly calling for an immediate ban on the AfD and an increase in military assistance to Ukraine. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz feels that he is “rapidly losing all his authority.” Rahr sees this in the fact that Merz is “climbing the barricades”, showing intransigence towards the Russian authorities, quarreling with China over its support for Moscow and “butting heads” with American President Donald Trump. Including because of the latter’s sympathies for the AfD.
