Dr Rod Thornton, senior lecturer in Russian defense and security studies at King's College, London, told the BBC: "Theoretically, these RPO satellites can become hunter satellites through physical collisions or pushing each other out of orbit."

Bowen added that China has demonstrated "space tug capabilities."

"A vehicle can get close to the satellite, grab it and move it to another orbit," he said.

He said this capability could bring positive benefits, such as clearing space junk, while also disabling functioning satellites.

However, certain types of space weapons can also produce large amounts of space debris.

Dr Mark Hilborne, an expert on space security and weaponization at King's College London, said direct-ascent anti-satellite missile tests - such as one conducted by China in 2007 - would leave a large amount of debris in orbit for an extremely long time.
