By-elections in Reggio Calabria: Roscioli in the lead with 53.62% at mid-counting

Counting is underway for the by-elections for the Chamber in the constituency 5 Reggio Calabria-Locri. Halfway through the ballot, with 263 out of 478, the centre-right candidate in the by-election for the Chamber in the Reggio Calabria-Locri constituency Fabio Roscioli - according to Eligendo data - is at 53.62%, that of the very broad camp Frank Benedetto 36.4 while that of Futuro Nazionale with Vannacci is at 9.02%. Francesco Toscano of Sovereign and Popular Democracy is at 1.32%. The president of the Calabria Region Roberto Occhiuto published a post on X claiming victory in the by-elections for the Reggio Calabria constituency for the Chamber. "Victory!" wrote the governor bringing a video in which Fancesco Cannizzaro looks on his mobile phone then stands up rejoicing and Occhiuto says "we won" together with the centre-right candidate Roscioli and the FI senator Lotito.

By-elections and turnout

The by-elections in the Chamber in constituency 5 Reggio Calabria-Locri became necessary after the resignation of Forza Italia deputy Francesco Cannizzaro, elected mayor of Reggio Calabria in the first round in the local elections of 24-25 May 2026. The vote was divided into two days, Sunday 27 September from 7am to 11pm and today - Monday 28th - from 7am to 3pm. Turnout collapsed: the definitive figure at the closing of polls at 3pm is 22.34%. Four years ago, however, when voting took place on a single day, it was 49.40%. In this round, however, voting took place on Sunday and Monday.

The attention of national politics

However, the attention of national politics remains high on the Reggio consultations, especially after Roberto Vannacci's entry into the field: in fact, a few hours after the presentation of the lists, there was the candidacy for National Future of Domenico Giannetta, who was group leader of Forza Italia in the Regional Council. For Vannacci this is the first real test with the ballot boxes. His goal is to erode votes from the center-right - which is nominated by Forza Italia treasurer Fabio Roscioli, close to the Berlusconi family - perhaps managing to win the head of cardiology Frank Benedetto, an expression of the broad field that includes all the oppositions from M5S to Italia Viva. The fourth candidate is Francesco Toscano, of Democracy Sovereign People.
