Russia carried out widespread drone attacks against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities

During Monday afternoon, Russia carried out extensive attacks against Kyiv. Among other things, a pharmaceutical company, petrol stations, a restaurant, an apartment building and the science academy building were set on fire in drone attacks.

Images show people clinging to the windows a few floors up on the academy building, while smoke billows out. Later, it is seen how they are rescued by the rescue service using ladders.

At least one person was killed in the attack, Reuters reports.

Among the injured is former Security Council chief Volodymyr Horbulin, 86, who was slightly injured and whose assistant was killed, according to the Ukrinform news agency.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha accuses Russia of cynicism after the country targeted a scientific institution in the middle of the working day.

- Russia is deliberately pushing the boundaries of what the country believes the outside world will tolerate. Every attack left without a forceful response only encourages the next one, Sybiha told Reuters.

"Every Russian terrorist act leads to casualties and injuries that could have been prevented if the pressure on Russia had finally become total," writes President Voloydmyr Zelenskyj on X.

Since April this year, Russia has started using cheap, jet-powered drones that Ukraine has difficulty defending against.

In recent weeks, Russia has also switched from nocturnal attacks to bombing the Ukrainian capital almost daily around the clock.

The historical building in which the Academy of Sciences is located dates from the 1850s and has served as a center for Ukraine's scientific institutions for more than a century. The building was badly damaged in the fire.

The Academy of Sciences is close to other important buildings and sights, such as Taras Shevchenko University, Kyiv's largest theater for opera and ballet, and the German Embassy, ​​reports the Kyiv Independent.

A total of eight people were injured on Monday in Kiev and at least four people died.

Russia also attacked Dnipro, where three people were killed when a drone struck an office complex, and Kharkiv, where more than 40 people were injured in an attack on an apartment building.
