Taiwan was not mentioned in the US-China talks, and the US reiterated that its policy towards Taiwan remains unchanged

The talks between U.S. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping came to an end. According to the key points of the talks announced by the United States and China respectively, Taiwan was not mentioned. The U.S. State Department and Ambassador to China Pang Dewei also reiterated on the 25th that the U.S. policy towards Taiwan has not changed.

The White House released a list of facts for Trump's reception of Xi Jinping's state visit. The fifteen major points listed included the achievements of the two countries' cooperation in combating drugs, economy and trade, US-China relations, and global situations. Taiwan was not mentioned. China's Xinhua News Agency announced on the 25th that the United States and China had reached an eight-point consensus, but did not mention Taiwan. Trump: Xi understands my position on Taiwan issue

Trump confirmed on the 26th that Xi Jinping mentioned Taiwan during the meeting, but "he understands my position on the Taiwan issue."

In an interview with Voice of America, the Chinese spokesperson of the U.S. State Department, Jia Bo, said when asked whether there had been any changes in the U.S. policy toward Taiwan, "The U.S. policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged. The U.S. still attaches great importance to peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the Taiwan Strait, and opposes any party's unilateral changes in the status quo. We must continue to ensure a free, open, peaceful and stable Asia-Pacific region."

In an interview on the same day, U.S. Ambassador to China Richard Pound also said that Trump's policy towards Taiwan has not changed. "We are committed to the Taiwan Relations Act, the Three Communiqués and the Six Assurances." Although China has been trying to impose changes, "we have not changed our wording or our position. We hope for peace across the Taiwan Strait and do not want coercion or support for independence." He said that the United States believes that Xi Jinping has received this message, and Trump shows respect and listens to China's statement. Pang Dewei said that Xi Jinping's visit has not been used to rewrite the United States' commitment to Taiwan. "The Taiwan issue is an independent issue" and "President Trump has made our interests very clear."

Carlson, a professor at Cornell University, pointed out to the New York Times that Trump's apparent refusal to acquiesce to Xi Jinping's demands on the Taiwan issue is "good news for the international prestige of the United States and Taiwan."
