It was revealed yesterday (26th) that Taipei Mayor Chiang Wanan's resume was suddenly modified on the Legislative Yuan website, and the academic qualifications were marked from "S.J.D." (Doctor of Laws) to "J.D.". Yin Wei, the chairman of the Taipei City Graduate School Entrance Examination Committee, went on the show to complain, saying that Chiang Wanan submitted correct information to the Legislative Yuan from the beginning, and never had to add "S" to it. However, netizens found out that Jiang Wanan once said in a televised political meeting on the mayoral election, "When I was studying in the United States, I was studying for a doctorate in law. Jiang Wanan's controversy erupted again. Some netizens criticized that his personal English academic qualification field in the Legislative Yuan was suddenly modified. The original academic qualification "S.J.D. (Doctor of Laws)" has been changed to "Juris Doctor (J.D.)". In this regard, the North City Government clarified that when Jiang Wanan served as a legislator, the Chinese academic information he provided was always correct, "Juris Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law." It was an error in the English translation by a manufacturer commissioned by the Legislative Yuan. In an interview before attending the event in the afternoon, Jiang Wanan emphasized that the information he provided for the 9th and 10th sessions was correct.

However, Facebook's "Unfair Green Camp SideWing" posted an article pointing out that according to online reports, among American degrees, PhDs are divided into two categories:

(A) Academic doctorates (such as Ph.D., S.J.D.): Graduation requirements: Must submit an original academic paper and pass an oral examination.

(B) Professional doctorates (such as J.D., M.D., D.D.S.): Graduation requirements: Most do not require writing a traditional academic paper.

As for the official translation and academic qualification recognition: Taiwan's Ministry of Education: The J.D. degree in the United States can be considered equivalent to a master's degree in China.

"The Unfair Green Camp SideWing" pointed out that regarding the differences in title customs, for J.D. graduates in the United States, they usually use Esq. (Esquire, barrister) or directly call themselves lawyers, and they rarely call themselves "Dr." (because "Dr." often refers to Ph.D. scholars or M.D. doctors in American colloquial speech). The conclusion is that he is not a J.D.! He also questioned Jiang Wanan’s statement at the mayoral election televised political meeting that he was studying for a doctorate in law. Is that okay?
