People in Morocco go to the polls to elect new members of parliament

Moroccan people went to the polls at 08:00 local time to elect new members of the 395-seat House of Representatives, the lower house of the parliament. Voting will end at 19.00.

According to official data, 28 political parties are participating in the elections in the country where there are 15 million 801 thousand 162 registered voters. A total of 7,288 candidates, including 2,658 women, are competing in the elections.

The support of 198 deputies in the House of Representatives is required to form a government that will serve for the next five years in Morocco.

Electoral competition is expected to be more intense in big cities. Casablanca, the country's largest city, stands out as one of the prominent electoral districts as it sends 57 deputies to the Parliament.

In addition to Casablanca, the capital Rabat, Fes, Meknes, Marrakesh, Tangier and Agadir are among the regions that will shape the election results.

In the last general elections held in Morocco on September 8, 2021, the National Union of Independents Party (RNI) finished first with 102 deputies. The government partner, the Nobility and Modernity Party (PAM), ranked second with 86 deputies, and the Independence Party ranked third with 81 seats.
