Secular state funeral for Emma Bonino in the Capitol

Today at 12.30 in the Protomoteca room in the Capitol, the secular state funeral of Emma Bonino, the historic radical leader who died on Friday at the age of 78, will be celebrated. The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella and the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will also be present at the ceremony.

On Sunday and Monday, numerous citizens, political leaders and representatives of institutions paid homage to Emma Bonino at the funeral home set up in the Sala della Protomoteca. Among those present were also the Foreign and Defense Ministers, Antonio Tajani and Guido Crosetto. Bonino's coffin was wrapped in the flag of the European Union.

Last night in Piazza del Campidoglio the civil vigil organized by +Europa took place to remember Emma Bonino. On the stage set up in the square, memories and testimonies dedicated to the radical leader alternated.

Among the interventions also that of the secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein. "I met Emma when I was still an activist and we were fighting about prison conditions and migrants," she recalled. “She encouraged us to fight even those battles on which commentators would say that votes cannot be won... but Emma taught us that they are fair battles on which the quality of democracy is measured because democracy is not measured on the quality of those who are better off”.

The dem leader then recalled the commitment of the late radical also for women, underlining that "as a female leader among many male leaders, I have an even stronger debt towards Emma, ​​because if in this country women are a little freer it is also thanks to her".
