Government schedules meeting with clubs to discuss the end of betting and seek alternatives

According to the government, the change was necessary due to the proximity of the initially proposed date and the flight times available for participants to travel, "in order to encourage broad participation in the meeting."

The new date and time will be defined and communicated to the Brazilian Football Confederation well in advance, so that it can inform the clubs and State Football Federations.

The meeting was scheduled after the clubs' negative reaction to the provisional measure that determined the end of fixed-odd betting platforms. Representatives from the Ministries of Planning, Finance and Civil House should also participate.

The provisional measure prohibiting betting websites and applications was published on Friday (25). According to the rules, companies will have until October 6th to go offline.

Bettors, in turn, have until October 5th to redeem the amounts that are still available on the platforms.

The meeting was organized by the Minister of Sports, Paulo Henrique Perna Cordeiro. According to the ministry, the intention is to listen to the clubs' demands and evaluate how the government can contribute to avoiding possible losses caused by the end of contracts with betting companies.

Bets have become an important source of revenue for Brazilian clubs in recent years, mainly through sponsorships. In 2025, betting companies paid R$1.143 billion in sponsorships to the 20 clubs with the highest revenue in the country, according to a survey by Sports Value.

The ban also opens up a discussion about sponsorship contracts signed by clubs with betting companies. It is this impact and the alternatives for the teams that should be among the topics discussed at Tuesday's meeting.

The proposal still needs to be approved by parliamentarians and sanctioned by the President of the Republic to take effect.

Exploring or operating so-called 'fixed odds bets', by any means, will become a crime punishable by imprisonment for 4 to 6 years, in addition to a fine. The punishment will be applied even if the agent has authorization from a foreign authority.
