Will their call be followed? Worried about the government's desire to once again freeze the index point in its draft budget for 2027, the trade union organizations representing the public service announced a day of strike, Tuesday September 29, with the ambition of putting pressure on the government a few days before the presentation of the draft budget. In the street, many demonstrations expected
The CGT lists some 170 events in mainland France and Corsica on Tuesday, in a map. A number similar to that of the last large-scale mobilization of the civil service, in December 2024. Between 130,000 and 200,000 demonstrators then marched in France, according to figures announced by the authorities and the CGT.
In the capital, the demonstration must start at 2 p.m. from Place de la République to reach Place de la Nation, passing through the Bastille. In Marseille, the procession will leave at 10:30 a.m. from Place des Réformés to reach the Bouches-du-Rhône prefecture.
In transport, almost “normal” traffic
Transport on the SNCF and RATP networks should only be occasionally disrupted by the strike, the two companies indicated on Sunday. At RATP, traffic will be “normal” on the Ile-de-France metro and RER networks, according to an RATP spokesperson.
On the SNCF side, “SNCF Voyageurs train traffic will be normal on Tuesday September 29 on the TGV and Intercités links” and “almost normal on the TER”, according to SNCF Voyageurs. On the Transilien network, traffic is expected to be "normal with the exception of a few lines where disruptions are expected (RER C, RER D, RER E, lines R, V)", adds the rail carrier. Details on traffic will be provided at the end of the day on Monday.
At school, absences in first grade
At the end of 2024, nearly one in three teachers had participated in the strike movement, according to the Ministry of National Education, a record not seen for five years. There were even 40% on strike in primary education, which includes nursery and elementary schools.
The mobilization should be significant again this year, since 40% of strikers are expected again in the first degree, franceinfo learned from the FSU-SNUipp union. On the secondary side, forecasts are impossible since teachers are not required to declare themselves on strike 48 hours in advance, as is the case in primary education.
Will students whose teacher is on strike have to be looked after by their parents? There is an obligation for town halls to provide a minimum reception service in primary education when at least a quarter of school teachers have announced a strike. However, this reception service does not concern the canteen or after-school activities, which may not be provided. If this threshold of strikers is not reached, the students of absent teachers are distributed among the classes of those who are present, recalls the service-public.fr site. In middle and high school, this compulsory reception does not exist, and course cancellations are therefore possible.
In high schools, a call for blocking
After the organization of blockades in around twenty Ile-de-France high schools the week of September 21, the High School Union (USL), the first high school union, is calling for a blockade of all high schools on Tuesday. The Ministers of the Interior and National Education warned on Monday that in the event of violence and total blockage of establishments, the police would intervene.
At the hospital and firefighters, emergencies provided despite the strike
For firefighters, Tuesday constitutes the high point of three weeks of mobilization to obtain additional resources. But for them, as for caregivers, staff requisitions are possible in order to ensure urgent interventions. In hospital, administrative delays or postponement of non-urgent care are nevertheless possible. Police officers, who do not have the right to strike, are also called by union organizations to participate in rallies if they are not on duty.
France Travail agencies possibly closed
This is a first since 2018. The ten France Travail unions are calling for a strike and demonstration on Tuesday. Reception should therefore be slowed down in many agencies, and some could be closed.
