Hamburger SV loses the season opener against Mainz 05 0:5

Two games, zero points, 0:7 goals, bottom of the table: Hamburger SV started the new Bundesliga season with a false start. There was a 0:5 (0:2) defeat against Mainz 05 in the Volksparkstadion. For the entire 90 minutes, HSV was unable to counter Mainz, and the team didn't even have a significant chance to score.

A serious setback for Hamburger SV, who had underlined their ambitions in the transfer market a few days earlier. The club paid nine million euros on Tuesday for the return of former player Fábio Vieira and eight million for Moroccan World Cup participant Zakaria El Ouahdi. HSV also loaned Norwegian World Cup driver David Møller Wolfe.

These three high-profile signings on the last day of the summer transfer window increased the number of arrivals to ten. Against Mainz, however, it became clear how much work still lies ahead of the newly formed team: HSV didn't have a shot on goal until the break, Mainz managed ten.

After the break, HSV coach Merlin Polzin tried to revive the offensive with three changes and turn the 0-2 deficit around after goals from Sheraldo Becker (19th) and Philipp Mwene (41st). But instead of catching up, Mainz increased their lead to 3-0 through Phillip Tietz three minutes after the restart (48th).

The Hamburg team managed to get a few shots after that, but it was never really dangerous. With his second goal, Tietz made it 4-0 in the 83rd minute. In stoppage time, Ransford Königsdörffer also scored to make it 5-0, against his former club. The HSV fans then left the stadium almost in a hurry.

Mainz has four points after two matchdays and is building on the strong impressions from the second half of the Bundesliga under coach Urs Fischer.
