Hamburg's Environment Senator and Second Mayor Katharina Fegebank has criticized the fuel discount. The Green politician told the German Press Agency that relief for people in this situation is essential. “But things cannot and must not continue like this: It is the third fuel discount in four years - and it has to be the last,” she demanded.

The Bundestag and Bundesrat wanted to decide on the new fuel discount on Friday.

Fegebank calls for targeted instruments

Once again, billions of dollars are being distributed according to the watering can principle, which ultimately subsidizes primarily multinational oil companies. “And the assembled science says: This is exactly the wrong way,” she said. “The fact that the federal government lacks the strength and insight to take effective measures is simply bitter.” Fegebank urgently called for targeted instruments. “The federal government must now finally deliver the mechanism for direct payments, which must be ready for use by 2027.” There is currently no solution that allows the state to make targeted payments to citizens, for example in times of crisis.
