HD Hyundai Develops Barge-Mounted Power Plant Technology for Offshore Power Generation

HD Hyundai is developing barge-mounted power plant technology as it expands into the power infrastructure market.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai’s intermediate holding company for its shipbuilding business, received approval in principle from the American Bureau of Shipping for its sea power plant.

The certification covers core technologies for the company’s proprietary design, including basic design, single-line diagrams and stability analysis. The plant uses a medium-sized HiMSEN engine to generate up to 100 megawatts of power offshore.

The floating facility provides electricity to data centers and industrial complexes, where securing sufficient power can be challenging. The market is expanding as AI adoption and data center expansion drive up global power consumption.

Offshore generation can help meet rising power demand while avoiding land and environmental constraints facing conventional power plants.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering plans to complete detailed design and follow-up certification before entering the BMPP market in earnest.
